Benedict Cumberbatch is a perfect actor. Do you want to know why? Because of this. Sherlock Holmes has no friends. Sherlock Holmes is a machine. Sherlock Holmes is a man with no tact or social skills. And Benedict makes that come across perfectly on the surface.
But then there are moments like this, where the pure and unfettered emotion of a man that has been searching for something more his whole life shines through the cracks in his stone facade. Moments like this are when we see the real Sherlock Holmes: a genius who looks back on his life and knows something is missing. When he asks Mycroft if he ever thinks that something’s wrong with them, that’s his way of saying that he knows they aren’t normal, and his way of checking himself against his brother. Mycroft knows they aren’t like others, but he’s accepted it. That’s why he’s the Ice Man to Moriarty. Mycroft doesn’t let his feelings have any say in his actions. He truly does not let his heart dictate anything.
Sherlock is his little brother. Sherlock looks up to him and wants to emulate him. He wants to be able to shut everything out and be brilliant just like his older brother, but he can’t help but feel like it’s wrong, like he’s missing out on something.
My brother has the mind of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?
What you can deduce about Sherlock’s heart is that he wants to be a good person. He wants people to like him, and he wants to help them, even if he knows he can’t respond to their praise the way most people would. He strives to be normal, he wants so badly to have a heart and to make others see that he does care, even if the need is unconscious. Because while half of him wants to be like his brother, the other half is still a child, just searching for love and someone to care about him.
And no one but Benedict Cumberbatch could have portrayed this so well.

Because while half of him wants to be like his brother, the other half is still a child, just searching for love and someone to care about him.

That someone appears, then he has to fake his own death and leave that love behind to protect said person. I truly believe Sherlock found his missing piece in John’s companionship. To experience that happiness only to have it yanked away so soon… The fall can’t kill him, but love does.
